First district contest: BCA 31, West Columbia 1

Those of you who made the long trip south to watch this game were treated to an outstanding showcase of offensive firepower as the BCA Bulldogs steamrolled the West Columbia Warriors in a game called on the mercy rule after the minimum five innings. Seeking to set the tone from the start, our boys had their best pregame infield/outfield session of the season before going out and scoring nine runs in the top of the first. Once our turn at bat ended, starting pitcher Brad Armstrong took the mound with focus and fire and struck out the side swinging. In the top of the second, the offense crossed the plate ten more times to give Armstrong a robust 19-0 lead early in the contest.

It was much more of the same from there, as every BCA player contributed to the run-scoring blitzkrieg while Armstrong completed the game on the mound - his finest start of the season - with 10 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed. As for the offense, team homerun leader Ryan Bertram led the barrage with 3 doubles, four runs scored, and his fifth round tripper of the season - a line drive over the left field wall for his second grand slam. I could write much more, but with a result such as this I think it best to give a line by line account of every player's contribution in this total team effort.

*Leadoff hitter Clay Wiseman scored three runs and stole two bases, finishing 1-2 with a BB and HBP - reaching base 3 out of 4 trips to the plate.

*Cameron Johnson didn't make an out all day, finishing with 2 hits, 3 walks, and a HBP in six times up. Johnson scored a run all six times he came up to bat. He added a fine play late in the game at shortstop, fielding a ground ball and making a strong throw to first to nail a streaking baserunner.

* Tyler Wilson was 1-3 and reached on a walk, scoring a run.

* Austin Wilson hit two doubles and scored three times in four trips to the plate.

* Tyler Beasley had his best offensive showing of his young career, capping off a 4-5 day with colossal clout high over the left field wall for a no-doubt homerun. Beasley also reached on a walk and hit a double. In addition, he threw out both Warrior baserunners who attempted to steal.

* Armstrong helped himself out at the plate, finishing with four hits in five at-bats, the last of which was the first homerun of his baseball career. In addition to the long ball, Armstrong scored two more runs and reached a fifth time via HBP.

* Robert Russell walked twice and scored a run in three trips to the plate.

* Cameron Gregory, starting in the outfield for the first time in his varsity career, ended the day with a single and a HBP in three plate appearances, scoring two runs.

* Tyler Haste came of the bench to play flawless centerfield, while blasting two hard-hit balls right at Warrior defenders, finishing 0-2 despite two great at-bats.

* Grant Harber stepped up to the plate twice and was promptly plunked each time, not even being afforded the chance to rack up a base hit.

* Caleb Harp scored two runs on the day and collected his first career base hit on a well-placed bunt before lining out to the pitcher to finish 1-2 at the plate.

* Wesley Winn scored two runs and hit the baseball well both times at bat.

* Dustin Martin reached on a walk and drove in two runs in three trips to the plate.

* Ryan Brown stepped up to bat twice, taking one for the team on a HBP and drawing a walk.

All in all, it was an extraordinary day for your BCA Bulldogs, who now will enjoy three days off in first place in the district as we all celebrate Jesus and what this time of year really is about - his death and resurrection so that we might have life. Next up we travel to Lutheran South for a 7:00 game Tuesday night.
