Big win over Brazosport Christian

The number one ranked team in TAPPS 3A visited Baytown today and left with their fourth defeat of the season compliments of your BCA Bulldogs. Anchored by five dominant innings of relief pitching by Bradley Armstrong, the Bulldog slugger tore the cover off the baseball and battered four Brazosport pitchers throughout the contest for ten runs. Armstrong earned his fourth win of the season by attacking the strike zone with a lively fastball and a sharp slider. When Armstrong entered the game in the third inning, the Bulldogs had just rallied to tie the game at three and reset the tally. The stout Eagle lineup was held at bay the rest of the way as junior hurler Armstrong stifled the potent Brazosport hitters, allowing the Bulldogs to take the lead and never look back.

Junior leadoff hitter Clay Wiseman had three hits and walked to set the table perfectly in his four times at bat, and freshman catcher Tyler Beasley also smacked three hits on the day. Every Bulldog hitter reached base and the brightest offensive display of the day happened late in the game when Tyler Wilson launched a ground-rule double deep to the left-centerfield alley for his second hit of the day. Not to be outdone, older brother Austin Wilson followed with a long double of his own to left-center to drive the younger Wilson in from second. The next batter up was junior slugger Ryan Bertram, who promptly drove a pitch down the left field line to drive in Austin Wilson and register the third consecutive Bulldog double.

Freshman outfielder Brandon Horne returned to the lineup for the first time in several weeks after being declared healed from an injury suffered diving for a ball in practice back in March. Horne drew a walk and stroked an opposite-field double in his return to the batter's box and his return is a nice spark with the state tournament coming up next weekend.

Wiseman started the game and allowed three runs in the first inning, though he was not helped out by his defense as the outfield misplayed a couple of balls that led to the rally. Wiseman pitched the second inning and threw well, but was removed in a move that was already planned before the game started. Originally Armstrong was slated to also be removed after two innings, but due to the dominance he displayed on the mound he was allowed to finish the game.
The win brought some revenge for the Bulldogs after losing twice earlier in the season to the Eagles. Next up for BCA is our home finale and final regular season game next Tuesday at 4 PM against West Columbia. Then we head to San Antonio next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the TCAL state finals!

BCA 9, First Baptist Christian Academy Pasadena 2

Former TAPPS district rival First Baptist Christian Academy of Pasadena visited Baytown today and was sent home with a defeat at the hands of your Bulldogs 9-2. Austin Wilson picked up the win on the mound, working the deciding fourth inning. Seven Bulldog pitchers each pitched an inning on the day as we prepare for the state tournament next week. Sophomore Grant Harber started, Wesley Winn pitched the second, Ryan Bertram the third, and Bradley Armstrong the fifth as the first five hurlers all posted zeroes on the scoreboard. Clay Wiseman and Jake Garcia pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and each allowed one run.

BCA led from the second inning on thanks to a mammoth two-run homerun to centerfield off the bat of junior slugger Bertram. Austin Wilson led the way offensively with three runs batted in and two hits as he reached base safely all four times at bat. Tyler Wilson and Bradley Armstrong added two hits on the day as everyone in the lineup contributed to the strong offensive display. With our record now 18-9, we host the Brazosport Eagles Thursday at 4 PM. Brazosport has beaten us twice this season in two very competitive slugfests, so we feel its our turn to hang a loss on them.

Armstrong No-hits Mount Carmel in 15-0 BCA rout

Junior hurler Bradley Armstrong continued his dominance over district foes last night with a five inning, complete game, no-hit shutout over the Mount Carmel Rebels. Striking out six batters and walking four, Armstrong challenged the opposing lineup with a dominant fastball and slider combination for his first varsity no-hitter to improve the BCA record to 17 wins and 9 losses.

The offense was awakened from its recent slumber and produced 15 runs on 11 hits in five innings before the game was called by mercy rule. Junior Tyler Haste, making his first career start , led the assault with two hits and five runs batted in. Haste laced two balls into the outfield for run-scoring singles and smashed another ball deep into left field for a sacrifice fly. Joining Haste to help lead the onslaught were the slugging Wilson brothers, Austin and Tyler. Austin crushed a pitch 430 feet to center field with the bases loaded and Tyler hit two doubles. Both Wilsons walked twice and collected four runs batted in.

Cameron Johnson had another outstanding performance, reaching base and scoring each turn up to bat. With three singles and a walk, Johnson's four runs scored ran his team-leading total to 38 in 26 games. Shortstop also Jake Garcia continued his hot streak, refusing to make an out as he hit a double, a single, and drew a base on balls in his three trips to the plate to score three runs. Wes Winn also clubbed a single in the contest to run the final base hit tally to 11 for the Bulldogs, while Tyler Beasley walked three times on the night to run his team-leading total to 23 bases on balls.

The game, originally planned for Memorial Park, was played at Ingrando Park, a lively city park that provided a unique playing environment for our boys. The start of the game was delayed over an hour and a half as the two teams had to travel between the two venues after some confusion due to the availability of the field at Memorial Park. The Bulldogs close out the regular season schedule with three home games the rest of the way. Next up will be former district rival Pasadena First Baptist on Monday at 4 PM.

Rematch with HCYA

Yesterday the fiesty HCYA Eagles returned to Baytown seeking to avenge an early-season loss to BCA and came away with the victory over the host Bulldogs. A five-run third inning was all the Eagles would need as the usually potent Bulldog lineup was kept at bay and denied the big inning that has been the norm for most of the 2010 season. The final score was 5-4 in favor of the visitors and BCA has now dropped two games in a row at home, after winning the first six home match-ups on the schedule. Wesley Winn took the loss, as two key infield errors and a misplayed ball in the outfield led to the Eagle rally that chased him from the bump. Austin Wilson came on in relief and pitched the final three and two-thirds innings without yielding a run.

Offensively for the Bulldogs, Wilson and Cameron Johnson each reached base three out of their four trips to the plate. Johnson was beaned twice and recorded a single, scoring two of the four BCA runs, while Wilson clubbed two opposite-field base hits and reach on a walk. Robert Russell, Tyler Wilson, Jake Garcia, and Ryan Bertram all recorded one base hit in the loss.

With our record falling to 16-9, we seek to return to the win column tonight as we make our final regular season road trip of 2010 to Mount Carmel. The scrappy Rebels will be looking for revenge after their run-rule loss to us in Baytown last week, but the boys will be ready and we are expecting a breakout performance from the offense.

Losing and winning...

A spirited comeback by the BCA Bulldogs fell short yesterday as the West Houston Thunder came to Baytown and defeated our boys 9-7 in eight innings. Trailing 7-3 and down to our last at-bat, the offense came to life and tied the game to send it to extra innings. With the winning run standing on third base, Clay Wiseman hit a line drive to centerfield that hung up in the wind long enough for the Thunder outfielder to sprint in, make the catch and pour water on the fire that was the BCA rally.

The loss spoiled another fantastic outing on the mound by junior hurler Wiseman, who threw five strong innings against a speedy and thunderous lineup. He racked up five strikeouts and allowed three earned runs, though two scored that shouldn't have after a routine fly ball to left field was misplayed into a double. Poor outfield play led to three of the West Houston runs in the game, as the aggressive Thunder sluggers hit two towering, but routine, fly balls to left field that were misjudged and misplayed into extra base hits. Errors happen, though, both mental and physical. The loss can equally be attributed to a bullpen meltdown and a very lackadaisical approach in the batters box for much of the day.

With runners in scoring position throughout the game, our Bulldog lineup couldn't seem to get the big hit. Wiseman, Jake Garcia, Boogie Russell, Ryan Bertram, Tyler Beasley, and Cameron Johnson all reached base multiple times, but the clutch hits to score runs were scarce until the seventh. Bertram led the way once again, crushing his seventh round-tripper of the season along with a line-drive double as he reached base safely in all four of his at-bats. Tyler Beasley also had a productive game, smashing two doubles in his five trips to the plate. Wiseman and Johnson each recorded multi-hit games, while the other hitters in the lineup were stifled by the Thunder moundsmen.

While not our best effort, we can be proud of our team as we battled back and forced extra innings against a tough opponent. West Houston was the most athletic and skilled team we have faced in several weeks and their speed put pressure on our defense all game long. In addition, injuries left us no choice but to use some of our younger and most inexperienced players in pressure situations that they had not yet seen. Though the loss, our first of the season on our home field, counts against us in the standings, it provides valuable experience for our entire roster. To find one's self all but defeated - standing in the middle of the ring bloodied by a fierce opponent, yet still fighting back and refusing to quit- is the type of experience that breeds confidence and growth and provides a well to drink from in the future when times are tough.

With our record now 16-8, we have a long weekend before returning to our field on Monday afternoon to take on HCYA in another contest that should provide a healthy dose of competition. With less than a month before the state finals, we believe that yesterday's loss, more importantly, the character we showed in fighting back, will prove to be a spark to help us continue to grow into that which we all seek to be - champions!
