Opening Night

Last night we traveled to Katy to take on Faith West Academy. We were excited about the start of the season, and we were confident that we would show up to play. Despite having only two outdoor practices, we felt good about our ability to come home with a win. The starting lineup was:

Tyler Wilson C
Cameron Johnson 2b
Ryan Bertram 3b
Robert Russell DH - for Dustin Martin LF
Austin Wilson P
Tyler Beasley SS
Josh Torres RF
Cameron Gregory 1b
Brandon Horne CF

We started our first game without several key players, who were either injured or still not with us due to basketball, but still confident in every player in the lineup. Two sophomores and three freshmen were starting in the first game of varsity baseball.

We got on the board quickly with two runs in the first inning and another in the second, all without recording a base hit. The boys showed great patience at the plate, led by Tyler Wilson's three walks in the game. All together, the Bulldogs drew 9 bases on balls in the game, to go along with 3 HBP's. Austin Wilson threw strikes from the beginning on his way to a very well-pitched win in which he recorded 5 strikeouts against two walks and two hits in his three innings of work.

In the fourth inning the bats came alive, beginning with a Tyler Wilson single for the first Bulldog hit of the season. A couple of batters later, Ryan Bertram belted a triple into the left-centerfield gap and the boys were rolling! Boogie Russell followed with a towering double to left-center for one of his team-leading three RBIs. When the smoke cleared, the Bulldogs tallied 7 hits in the fourth and fifth innings on their way to a 12-1 victory by mercy rule after the minimum required five innings.

One of the most exciting things that we can take away from the night was that the defense was flawless, handling all 20 chances without an error. Brandon Horne and Tyler Wilson both stole bases, and Josh Torres pitched two fine innings to close things out. It was an exciting start to what we all believe will be a memorable season, and we look forward to seeing many of our fans at our home opener next Thursday, February 18 at 4 PM.
