Last day at the Hitchcock Bulldog Bash Tournament
Yesterday we traveled to Hitchcock once again and played two solid games to finish the tournament. First we took on Brazos high and came away with a solid win 7-4. Josh Torres tossed his best outing of the season and picked up the victory, with Cameron Gregory and Wesley Winn each pitching an inning in relief. The offense hit the ball fairly well, led by Clay Wiseman, Tyler Wilson, and Cameron Johnson. The win provided a championship game appearance that would prove to be a dogfight with longtime rivals the Brazosport Christian Eagles.
Bradley Armstrong took to the rubber for BCA and pitched a great game, picking up the loss in a 13-9 slugfest that did not do justice to the quality of game that Armstrong pitched. One day after finishing basketball season with a heartbreaking loss in the state semi-finals, Armstrong dealt strike after strike and pitched well enough to win the game. Unfortunately, some questionable calls by the umpires and some defensive miscues led to a deficit that we were unable to overcome.
The championship game started off well for the Bulldogs, as cleanup hitter Austin Wilson hit a towering shot twenty-five feet over the centerfield fence for a two-run homerun and early Bulldog lead. The bats then fell silent and the BCA sluggers found themselves trailing 8-2 after five innings. Then the fight came out of our Dogs - some focused at-bats led to several base hits and Austin Wilson's second homerun of the night, this time belted the opposite way. When the dust cleared the score was 8-7 and the game was on.
After allowing five runs to Brazosport in the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs batted in the seventh inning determined to come back and pull out the championship victory. Wilson's third homerun of the night, a rocket-propelled two-run shot to left-center, proved to be all the rally that the Eagle pitchers would surrender. The young Bulldogs proved that they will not quit, no matter the deficit, and everyone held their heads high despite the bittersweet taste of a second-place finish in the tournament. We all agree that our best baseball is ahead of us, and we hope to improve each day and each game as we prepare to start a new winning streak and pursue the first Baytown Christian state baseball championship.
Austin Wilson was the star of the day, blasting three homeruns in one game and garnering selection as a member of the all-tournament team. Joining him there was younger brother Tyler, who led the Bulldogs in hitting throughout the tournament. All in all, it was a nice run in the tournament and we are proud to be 6-2 after eight games, knowing that we can still improve and have the ability to win every game we play the rest of the way. Next up is Langham Creek on Thursday at 1:30 in the afternoon at Lee HS here in Baytown in our opening matchup at the annual Gary Herrington tournament. The Lobos are currently ranked #12 in the Houston region by Baseball USA/Houston5abaseball.com and should provide the toughest test yet for our boys, so we hope you can make it out to cheer us on to victory.

BCA 6, Palacios 2
On the strength of a solid pitching performance from junior Clay Wiseman, we were able to pull out a 6-2 victory over the fighting Sharks of Palacios. Senior Josh Torres led the offense with three hits in a game where the Bulldog defense wasn't as sharp as usual. Torres has recorded base hits in his last four at-bats.
Ryan Bertram came on in relief of Wiseman to throw two shutout innings for the save, and he also hit a double off the top of the centerfield fence that was inches away from being the first BCA homerun of the season. Other offensive stars were Wiseman, with two stolen bases and two runs scored, Tyler Wilson who reached base three out of his four trips to the plate, and super sophomore Cameron Johnson who had two hits, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly that scored the first Bulldog run of the day.
The game started off slowly for the Bulldog lineup, but the bats came alive in the third inning when Bertram's blast to center became the first of five consecutive hits with two outs. When the dust cleared, the score was 4-1 in favor of BCA and the Baytown boys commanded the game from that point forward.
Tomorrow at 12:30 PM we take on the Brazos Cougars, who toppled tournament host Hitchcock today in a tightly contested, extra-inning affair. If we win that game, we will face Brazosport Christian in a rematch of last Friday night's 10-9 barn-burner for the championship at 5:30 PM.
Time to roll up our sleeves and bring home some hardware!

BCA 6, Port Arthur Memorial 3
After a rocky start, your BCA Bulldogs pulled out a victory over Port Arthur Memorial last night in the opening game for each team at the Hitchcock tournament. Led by the Wilson brothers, BCA overcame a 3-0 deficit in the top of the first inning through solid relief pitching and patient hitting. Senior Austin Wilson entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the first inning and began challenging the Titan hitters by locating his fastball and finished out the game for his third victory on the young season. Younger brother Tyler Wilson, the leading BCA hitter, led the offensive effort with two hard-smashed singles to centerfield that ignited the Bulldog attack.
Overall, the lineup was patient as they drew several walks to go along with base hits from Cameron Johnson, Josh Torres, and Ryan Bertram as the Bulldog rally resulted in three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth when the game was called due to time limit with BCA still batting and threatening to score more with multiple runners on base. The defense was stalwart once again, as catcher Tyler Beasley threw out a runner trying to steal second base in the first inning to set the tone for another game of impeccable defense. This was the third game that the Bulldogs played error-free in the field.
Sitting at 4-1 five games into the season is a good place to be, but everyone in the program knows we are capable of much better baseball. As with any team counting on young and untested players to play major roles, we are working through nervousness and wide-eyed bewilderment at times. As the games continue and the rookies become battle-hardened we expect to improve each time out as we continue our drive to be the best baseball team in BCA history, and first state champion, as well!
Come on out this afternoon at 1:30 and watch us battle the scrappy Palacios Sharks, who are coming off of a 15-4 thrashing of Bay Area Christian last night. We are expecting a battle and are excited about the challenge.
