BCA 8, Baytown Lee 6

Here is what the local paper said about our victory on day two of the Gary Herrington tournament:

BCA tops Lee on day 2

The Baytown Christian Bulldogs held off a feisty Baytown Lee team for an 8-6 victory in the second day of the Herrington tournament.

BCA jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and never let the lead go.

Clay Wiseman pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs on 120 pitches. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven Gander batters.

Ryan Bertram and Josh Torres led the way offensively for the Bulldogs. Bertram went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Torres went 2-for-2 with a double.

Head coach Kade Johnson was pleased with the result.

“I thought that we had a rough first day,” Johnson said. “I thought we played some teams that were more mature than us, and I thought that it showed in the results.

“Tonight however, I thought our boys did a good job. I thought we earned everything we got, and I thought we did a good job of using the entire field offensively, rather than just trying to pull everything.”

On the flip side of this win was the Baytown Lee Ganders.

The Ganders picked up their third straight loss after Friday night’s game.

Daniel Guzman and Josh Salinas led the way offensively for the Ganders.

Guzman went 2-for-3 with two runs while Salinas went 1-for-4 with a run of his own.

Mike Gomez (0-1) picked up the loss for the Ganders.

“I keep preaching to the kids the same thing, ‘every run counts,’” Ganders coach David Hackney said.

“Tonight we lost 8-6, and I would venture to guess we gave them five runs on us just missing routine plays.

“I can say I am glad that this is happening now and not in district, but I can see that we are going to need to work harder in practice to fix these mental errors.

“I am glad we hit the ball hard, but when they (BCA) are making plays like they did, you can’t help that.”

The loss puts the Ganders at 3-5 on the season and the win puts the Bulldogs at 7-4 on the season.

That is a nice recap by local writer Robert Chambliss, and all I would like to add is how proud we are as a coaching staff of the effort the boys gave out there. To show up and beat one of the big boys in town on their own field is something that they can all be proud of when they look back on their careers. The Bulldog sluggers hit the ball hard, made great plays defensively, and Clay Wiseman was ever bit a bulldog on the mound. It was a great win that is hopefully the start of another long winning streak. We take on Channelview today at 10:00 AM at Sterling HS and then we travel to the other side of town to Goose Creek Memorial on Tuesday night, two tough opponents that provide an opportunity for us to pick up two more great wins. We are still maturing with every at-bat, every inning on the mound, and every play in the field, and things are shaping up to be a very special season.
